NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 11, 2024) — YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee is hosting the annual Stand Against Injustice Community Rally and Advocacy Fair on Thurs., Sept. 26, at the Historic Courthouse & City Hall. This year’s theme, “Healing Through Unity,” focuses on addressing racism as a public health crisis and highlights the importance of collective action to create healthier, more just communities. An advocacy fair will take place from 11:30am – noon. The public program will be held inside Metro Council Chamber.

The keynote speaker for this year’s rally is Katina Beard, MSPH, CEO of Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center. Since 1968, Matthew Walker has been at the forefront of providing essential healthcare to marginalized communities in Middle Tennessee. Mayor Freddie O’Connell and Vice Mayor Angie Henderson will also attend, along with several members of Metro Council and community leaders.

The rally will feature musical performances by Fisk University music majors Elise Golden and Imani Suitt, adding a powerful and inspirational element to the day’s activities. In addition, the Carrie Hull Award will be presented to Rita P. Mitchell in recognition to her outstanding contributions to the YWCA mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.

As our city, state, and nation grapple with increasing polarization, the focus on racism as a public health crisis is more important than ever. By uniting individuals and organizations committed to justice, the event aims to foster understanding, healing, and tangible progress toward racial and health equity.

This event is made possible through the generous support of The Harnisch Foundation and the Metro Human Relations Commission. Advocacy organizations attending the event include AMAC, League of Women Voters, Black Mental Health Village, Mashup, The Equity Alliance, and Metro Office of Family Safety.

The Stand Against Injustice Webinar Series will precede the rally, on Thurs., Sept. 19, with a conversation featuring Tené Hamilton Franklin, Maryam Abdallah, and D’Yuanna Allen-Robb. These experts will discuss the mental, physical, and community-level impacts of racism. The webinar will provide critical insights into the pervasive effects of racial injustice on health and well-being, offering paths for action and change. The FREE webinar takes place from Noon – 1pm.
